KING’S LYNN: Wife put fingers up attacker’s nose to end assault

A woman desperate to save her husband from an attack put her fingers up the assailant’s nose and pulled, Lynn magistrates heard.

She was then bitten by the attacker, Gary Mills, after one of her fingers accidentally went into his mouth, the court was told on Wednesday.

Mills, 27, of Terrace Lane, Lynn, was previously convicted after a trial of assaulting Kelly and Stephen Key in May last year.

He was jailed for six weeks, suspended for 12 months, and sentenced to 200 hours unpaid work. He was ordered to pay compensation of £150 to Mr Key and £50 to Mrs Key along with £250 costs.

Yvonne Neill, prosecuting, said Mrs Key intervened when Mr Key was being held round the neck by Mills. Mr Key described having difficulty breathing and said Mills’ legs were wrapped round him to stop him escaping.

Mrs Key saw the colour drain from her husband’s face and screamed at Mills to stop. She ended up putting her fingers up his nose to pull him off, said Ms Neill.

Mr Key had to see a throat specialist after the attack but suffered no long-term harm.

After reading pre-sentence reports, the magistrates heard from Tim Bartlam, for Mills, that his client was a hard-working young man.

The unseemly incident started with an argument and Mr Bartlam said blows were struck by Mr Key and Mills.

They ended up on the floor with Mills trying to restrain Mr Key round the neck. “It was reckless but there was no intentional choke hold,” said Mr Bartlam.

When Mrs Key put her fingers up his nostrils and her hand went in his mouth, he automatically bit it. “That again wasn’t intentional,” said Mr Bartlam.
