Last dance at Lynn's Zoots?

THE future of Lynn's Zoots nightclub appears to be in the balance following its shock closure.

The popular venue unexpectedly closed its doors for the last time on Saturday, January 26, with a message on its website simply stating "We're sorry but Zoots nightclub is now closed."

Owners CanDu Entertainment have been unable to confirm what the future holds for the building on John Kennedy Road but have not ruled out the possibility of another nightclub opening on the site.

Area manager David Keetley told the Lynn News: "It is closed pending refurbishment. It will carry on in some guise but we have no date in mind.

"There is nothing in the pipeline and there is nothing in the budget for any work before April. It will be May at the earliest before we start."

Mr Keetley said he hoped the venue would re-open by the end of the year and Zoots staff have now been re-deployed at other CanDu venues or have taken redundancy packages.

A message on the nightclub's website, www.zootsnightclub.com, states: "We are very sorry to inform you that we are now closed and will not be reopening.

"Many thanks for your custom over the years. The Zoots crew."

The 2 million transformation of the former Pilot Cinema into Zoots nightclub was completed in 1999.

When plans for the state-of-the-art venue were first submitted strong objections were raised by neighbours who were concerned about a possible increase in vandalism and noise levels along with potential parking problems.

But former owners Luminar Leisure spent around 80,000 on soundproofing the old cinema while also complying with conditions regarding the installation of CCTV.

Last year Norfolk County Council announced plans for new gates to be installed between Pilot Street and John Kennedy Road in a bid to tackle the problems caused by rowdy nightclubbers.

The move came after residents complained about a range of anti-social and intimidating behaviour including frequent smashed windows, people urinating and vomiting in the street, shouting, drunken arguments and fights.

CanDu Entertainment will continue to operate in Lynn through its other nightclub venue, Heights.
