Last orders at Fairstead: Pull it down

THIS is the sight Fairstead residents have been waiting for for more than ten years - the Fairstead Pub as rubble.

The Fairstead Pub, a long-standing symbol of neglect on Fernlea Road, was finally demolished last week as part of a campaign to breathe new life into the estate.

Staff from West Norfolk Council completed the demolition on Thursday, much to the delight of local residents especially Graham Brooks, who lives directly opposite the former pub.

He told the Lynn News: "Obviously we are very pleased it has gone and we are now just waiting to see what happens to it.

"It is amazing, we can now see the houses on the other side.

"I hope it is not left open and that something positive is done with it.

"I would like to see something similar to what they have at Centre Point, an open garden with seats and a nice area for people to sit.

"I would also like to see a CCTV camera for the area, there is nothing down here and that it is very important."

The pub was bought by the Improving Neighbourhoods Board using money from the Safer Stronger Communities fund in December 2006.

It was hoped the pub would be demolished by July or August, following the completion of a formal tendering process to engage contractors to do the work.

However, there were numerous delays with the project, such as getting the utilities to the site turned off and the systems purged.

A decision on the future of the site has yet to be made, but the board will be meeting on Thursday, November 22, to discuss possible options for the land.

A spokesman for West Norfolk Council said: "We hope to balance the needs of the community with those of the Improving Neighbourhoods Programme and we will look to involve the public in this as appropriate."
