Last WWI vet dies aged 110
THE last known veteran of World War I has died two weeks before her 111th birthday.
Florence Green, who served in the Women’s Royal Air Force, died at Briar House in North Lynn, on Saturday.
Mrs Green made international headlines when she was recognised in 2010 as the world’s only remaining female veteran of the First World War.
She served in the WRAF as a waitress in the officers’ mess at Marham after enlisting in September 1918.
Last May, the only living male combat veteran of the conflict, British-born sailor Claude Choules, died in Australia at the age of 110.
Mrs Green was well enough to continue living at home in North Lynn with her daughter, May, 90, until shortly before Christmas.
Her younger daughter, June Evetts, who lives in Oundle, said: “I’m very proud of her and she was very proud of the recognition she received.”
Mrs Green also leaves a son, Bob, 86, who lives in Edinburgh.
And Mrs Evetts said her mother had been well-looked after at Briar House.
