LATEST NEWS: 90 firefighters tackle blaze at Downham Market business estate
Ninety firefighters from Norfolk and Cambridgeshire have been tackling an early hours blaze today (Wednesday) that severely damaged a used car dealership and garage workshops in Downham.
Fire crews were called to David Jones Cars on St John’s Way business estate at 3.20am. They came from Downham, Lynn, Methwold, West Walton, Outwell, Wisbech, Terrington St Clement and Littleport,
A Norfolk Fire Service spokesman said: “At the height of the fire, 90 firefighters were on scene. The blaze was in 30 to 40 square metres of garage and workshops at a car dealership.”
The nearby A1122 Downham bypass was closed to traffic from 4.55am to 8.30am while it was used as a holding area for the multitude of fire engines. Traffic was diverted through the town centre.
At one point, firefighters withdrew from the site when it was thought there might be acetylene cylinders in the workshop but they soon returned when it was established this was not the case.
