Library celebrates 40 years

GLASSES were raised and a birthday cake shared out to mark the fortieth anniversary of the opening of Fakenham Library.

The cake had been made in the shape of a book with a cover of brown icing. County councillor and local resident David Callaby was on hand to make the first cut and congratulate staff on the building's longevity.

He said it was always a welcoming place and somewhere he enjoyed visiting, adding: "In all my years as a councillor I've never had any complaints about the library. I think that is something we should all take pride in."

Library manager Ann Keeble recalled earlier days when book borrowing was the primary function of libraries everywhere. "Things were very different to the way they are now," she said. "There was a card filing system and none of the choices like films or CDs that we offer today."

In 1997 the Oak Street building underwent a major transformation when its upstairs reference section was entirely removed.

With an extension to the ground floor, this created a much brighter and lighter space for staff and library users. Last year new technology was installed to enable all ages to check their own books in and out electronically.
