Lithuanian fell to death from Lynn roof

A LITHUANIAN man plunged to his death after he fell from the roof of his home and landed in a neighbour's garden, an inquest heard this week.

Virginijus Valys (35), of 5 Marshall Street, Lynn, was found lying on a concrete courtyard in just his underwear after falling from the roof in April, when he suffered fatal head injuries along with a fractured jaw and a number of cuts.

An inquest held at Swaffham Magistrates' Court on Monday heard that Mr Valys' body was found by his elderly neighbour Hilda Salmon on the morning of April 7, when she opened her back door to dispose of some rubbish and saw him lying face down on the slabs.

In a statement read by Greater Norfolk Coroner William Armstrong she said she thought he had been kicked to death and thrown over the wall. She went inside and called the emergency services.

Sergeant Howard Elvidge, one of the first police officers to arrive at the scene, said the roof tiles at Mr Valys' home were loose which suggested he had either jumped or fallen off.

He said there were no signs of a struggle or fight.

Mr Valys, who was working in the Lynn area as a roofer, had a history of mental health problems which saw him detained at the town's Queen Elizabeth Hospital in June 2006 under the Mental Health Act.

In August 2006 he was admitted to a hospital in Frankfurt, Germany, after jumping from a fifth floor window.

Mr Armstrong said: "The post mortem makes it clear that he died from head injuries consistent with a head-first fall from a position of height.

"There is nothing to indicate suspicious circumstances or evidence to indicate he was involved in any kind of struggle.

"It appears he fell from this building to his death, but the circumstances of that happening are not clear."

Mr Armstrong said he could not be sure if Mr Valys deliberately jumped from the roof or if the fall was an accident and recorded an open verdict on his death.
