Lynn college 'outstanding place to learn'
LYNN'S College of West Anglia has been graded outstanding and ranked among the best in the country after its latest Ofsted inspection.
The college caters for about 13,500 students of all ages, about two thirds of whom are based in Lynn. It also operates three other sites in Wisbech and Cambridge.
In the Ofsted report published today, the college was awarded grade one in five key areas – effectiveness of provision, capacity to improve, achievement and standards, quality of provision and leadership/management.
The inspectors found the college was working very effectively to meet the educational needs of the region. They said: "Success rates are consistently high and learners make outstanding progress."
The principal, David Pomfret, said the report was a fantastic endorsement of what the college was doing and a tribute to the hard work and professionalism of all the staff.
"I'm really proud to be the principal of such a good college," he said.
Mr Pomfret took on the role last year and particularly recognised the contribution made to be development of the college by "the people before me," including former principal Mr Peter Stewart.
Colleges achieving a top grading were "few and far between" and Mr Pomfret said: "For sure we will be in the top ten per cent of colleges nationally. This places us right up there."
Norfolk's area director for the Government's Learning and Skills Council, Graham Brough, said: "This prestigious award is achieved only by truly excellent colleges. It is great news for the people of West Norfolk and Fenland."
Young people would be encouraged to continue learning and employers could have confidence in the training provided, said Mr Brough.
Tilney St Lawrence student Karen Cunningham (17), took part in dance display to celebrate the college's achievement. She started her performing arts course at the Isle campus in Wisbech last September.
She said: "It's a really good college. There are lots of courses to suit everyone. The teachers help you as much as they can. Everyone is polite and there is never any trouble."
