Lynn Museum move to encourage pupils
CHANGES are being planned to the opening hours at Lynn's historic Town House Museum to encourage more schools to take advantage of the facility.
A Lynn Museums business plan, due to go before West Norfolk Council's museums committee on Monday, has revealed the centre will close to the general public for 17 weeks from November to March, meaning it will be open for just 35 weeks in the year.
The move has been made so the region's schools can book exclusive visits during the closure period, giving pupils unrestricted use of the galleries, exhibits and displays on offer.
Schools will be actively encouraged to book visits at such times and it is now hoped that more youngsters will visit the museum.
The winter closure will also allow two front-of-house staff to be redeployed at Lynn Museum and they will undergo training so they can support school visits to the Seahenge and West Norfolk Story galleries, help with family events at weekends and holidays while providing learning and interpretation support.
Other key features of the plan include a scheme to charge a general admission to Lynn Museum between April and September, while offering free entry from October to March.
During the six-month charging period a free admission voucher scheme has been proposed via local newspapers, relevant outlets and community development workers. The report states the plan has compiled to make the best use of staffing and building resources, while delivering improvements.
