Lynn News helps to swell Poppy funds
LYNN'S Royal British Legion has smashed its Poppy Appeal target of £25,000 this year – despite a falling number of collectors in the area.
Generous locals have so far helped to raise just under 29,500 for ex-servicemen and their families, and the branch's Poppy Appeal organiser Gerry Tann said it will easily pass 30,000 by the time this year's appeal ends in May.
It is great news for the branch, which was 2,000 short of the target last year, when it lost several of its usual collectors.
Mr Tann said its welfare work has continued to rise, with new cases in Norfolk doubling to more than 600 this year.
"In monetary terms, that is more than 255,000. So you see the more money we raise, the more people we can help," he added. "None of this would be possible without the help of the people in this area."
"A Lynn News feature covering the Poppy Appeal led to more volunteers coming forward to offer assistance and encouraged shops, businesses and members of the public to give generously to this year's appeal."
