Lynn's Springwood praised as good school
LYNN'S Springwood High School has been praised as a good school with excellent opportunities – and because pupils really enjoy being there – following an Ofsted inspection.
The 1,528-pupil Queensway school was visited by the Ofsted inspectors last month, and there was particular praise for its arts provision.
In his report, inspector Anthony Knight said students made good progress at Springwood with good progress overall seen in lessons observed.
"Students make significantly more progress in English and mathematics than the national average," he said.
"The percentage of students achieving at least five A* to C grades at GCSE, including English and mathematics, increased dramatically in 2006 to above the national average.
"This percentage increased again in 2007. Most groups of students achieve significantly above the national averages. The attainment of boys in particular has increased rapidly."
Mr Knight noted the personal development and well-being of students was outstanding.
"Students' social and moral development is excellent, as seen in the enthusiastic appreciation and celebration of each other's successes.
"Students really enjoy school and attend well."
Mr Knight's report said the quality of teaching and learning was good throughout the school, with teachers enjoying excellent relationships with students.
Lessons were managed well and students responded to tasks positively. However, he said: "Although the majority of lessons are planned appropriately, lesson objectives and expectations are not always made clear."
Mr Knight had particular praise for arts at the school, which has a 262-strong sixth form.
In a letter to students he said: "Springwood is a good school with excellent opportunities for you, particularly in the arts.
"Your school is rightly proud of how you behave and how many of you contribute so much to the school through, for example, the school council."
Deputy headteacher Mark Ballman was thrilled for pupils, parents and staff adding: "I am particularly pleased that our own self-evaluation was fully endorsed by the inspection team."
The school was delighted to receive congratulations from North West Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham who said the report was "quite superb" and "a huge tribute to the sterling efforts of the inspirational head (Peter Hopkins) and dedicated staff and governors."
