Lynn shoplifter hid port in trousers
LOSING control over his drinking led a shoplifter who had served a succession of jail terms to offend again, Lynn magistrates heard.
Lithuanian Rytis Banys (39), of 68 London Road, Lynn, appeared before Lynn magistrates on Saturday after being arrested for stealing two bottles of port from Morrisons the previous day.
He pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody until Monday, when the magistrates ordered him to be detained at the court for the rest of the day.
His solicitor, Ben Pearson, told the magistrates Banys had served the equivalent of about a week in custody. "That may seem to you to be his just deserts," he said.
Mr Nicholas Crampton, prosecuting, said Banys was seen hiding the bottles of port down his trousers before leaving the store without paying. He was stopped outside and the police were called.
Mr Pearson said his client was drunk when he committed the patently unsophisticated offence. He had a list of previous convictions, mostly in 2006 when he was before the court nearly every month and received a succession of custodial sentences.
In 2007 Banys went from January to December without a court appearance. "During that period, he gained some control over his drinking because he was working for a local agency," said Mr Pearson.
He lost his job because he could not produce his passport and could not find another because he injured his hand. But he was confident of finding work again shortly, added Mr Pearson.
