Lynn: Three-week safety course for women

A FREE course aimed at educating women about personal safety will start in Lynn this week.

The three-week programme is being run by Liz Clark (43) and officers from Norfolk Police's Gaywood, Fairstead and Reffley Team.

Emphasis will be on teaching women to become more aware of their surroundings and how to stay safe. The third session will focus on domestic violence.

Mrs Clark, who was a victim of sexual assault and attempted rape herself, said: "You are giving people the knowledge and it makes them one step ahead. It is just about educating people on how to go about things safely."

At the age of 19 she was sexually assaulted while in Scotland and it was after that she decided to become involved in personal safety.

"It changed my life. I would have never been doing this if it was not for that. I thought the theory side was so important about learning ways on how to stay safe. The physical side is the last resort," she added.

Part of the course is learning simple techniques to be able to defend yourself in situations but most of the course is based on information provided by officers and Mrs Clark.

Participants will also learn how to cope in certain situations with the help of role play scenarios and question and answer sessions.

The third session, which will be purely theory based, is especially designed to tackle the issue of domestic violence.

Mrs Clark added: "There is a big push on the theory side and it is about getting confidence back."

Places for the course are on a first-come first-serve basis and are limited. To enrol contact the Gaywood, Fairstead and Reffley Team on 0845 456 4567.

The sessions take place between 7pm and 9pm at Freebridge Housing, Juniper House, Austin Street, on Thursday, March 18, Thursday, March 25, and Thursday, April 1.

People have to attend all three sessions.
