Lynn town guides still going strong

THE team of volunteers who show hundreds of visitors around places of interests in Lynn, have celebrated a landmark in their own history.

Past and present town guides, families and friends, gathered at Lynn Town Hall last Friday to reminisce, exchange anecdotes and marked the 30th anniversary of the organisation.

Guests included West Norfolk's Deputy Mayor and Mayoress, Michael Langwade and Christine Holding, and the speaker for the evening, Dr Simon Thurley, who is chief executive of English Heritage and owns one of the town's most important buildings, Clifton House.

Dr Thurley was introduced by Lynn Town Guides chairman, Jill Price, and the vote of thanks was given by June Howling.

Mrs Price and Mrs Howling are among five of the original members who are still guiding today. Others are Vic Saunders, Peter Sykes and Jean Tuck, and Doris Sykes who also joined up in 1977 and has been bookings secretary ever since.

Since 1977, a total of 66 guides have been trained and qualified at courses which are held approximately every five years.

At present there are 32 guides, including 11 new guides who completed the training course and were "badged" in August.

They conduct guided walks around Lynn from April to the end of October and as well as the regular walks they offer special walks and tours during Lynn Festival. They also organise specific programmes for local interest groups and schools.

The guides are all volunteers and the 36,000 they have raised over the years has been used to support local conservation and preservation projects.

Bookings and leaflet details of walks are available at the Old Goal House, the Tourist Information Centre and by visiting www.visitwestnorfolk.com
