BARGAIN retailer Discount UK opened its doors for the first time to the crowds waiting outside on Friday morning.

As the pounds were piling up in tills at the packed store.

Chris Edwards, trading director at Discount UK, said: “King’s Lynn is a great town and we’re very excited to open our first store here.

“Discount UK aims to offer the best possible value and so we hope it will prove a big hit with savvy shoppers in Lynn who are seeking better deals and bigger savings to combat the rising cost of everyday living.”

As well as helping cost-conscious shoppers to save money on their everyday shop, the store is creating 40 retail jobs.

Paul Dennis, store manager, said: “This has been one of the most successful openings for the entire company.

“I want to give a big thank you to our staff for all their hard work in getting the store ready for opening and welcoming our customers into the store.

“I think the shop will be very successful in the area and wouldn’t be surprised if the brand is soon looking to expand in Norfolk.”

The Lynn store is the 28th one to open and marks the brand’s rapid expansion since it was founded in 2010.

The opening of the store is welcome news for the town after it emerged that the Lynn branch of outdoor clothing shop Millets will be closing after the company went into administration and was bought by JD Sports Fashion.

A spokesman for JD Sports Fashion, said: “We will evaluate the performance of each store in the coming months in order to reach a conclusion about the number of stores which will be retained long term.”

Peter Cowgill, Executive Chairman of JD Sports Fashion Plc, said: “We are delighted to add another leading multi-branded retail proposition to our portfolio of retail businesses.

“We believe we can restore the business to a profitable market leading position.”
