Marham mum helps search for lifesavers
A MARHAM mother who lost her two-year-old child to leukaemia is working with a national charity to encourage people to become bone marrow donors.
Janet Short, originally from North London, would have been celebrating her son Daniel's 21st birthday this year and is determined to help save the lives of others.
There was no suitable bone marrow match when Daniel fell ill and needed a transplant, so doctors were forced to use his own harvested and cleaned bone marrow during treatment.
Now Mrs Short, who works as a personal assistant at RAF Marham, has joined forces with the Anthony Nolan Trust to encourage people living in and around the village to sign up and join the volunteer bone marrow register.
Every 21 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening disorder, such as leukaemia, where often the only chance of a full recovery is to have a bone marrow transplant.
Donors must be aged 18 to 40, weigh more than eight stone, not be severely overweight and be willing to donate to any patient they ever match. Once donors have joined, they stay on the register until their 60th birthday.
