MasterChef Matthew holds on to dream after gateau fiasco
MATTHEW Frost hopes his MasterChef success is not just a flash in the pan after being eliminated from the BBC One cookery show.
Instead, he says, his appearance on the popular programme is the next step towards his childhood dream of working in the food business.
“My plan is to get some local restaurant kitchen experience under my belt and see if I can move things on,” said Matthew, who was one of 12 cooks chosen to appear on the show out of 27,000 entrants.
“I never expected to get on the programme, so although I’m gutted to have been eliminated, it has been a fantastic experience.”
It was while cooking a black forest gateau for previous contestants, in front of the harsh glare of unforgiving cameras, that things started to take a turn for the worse and co-presenter John Torode unusually had to step in to help deliver it on time.
A couple of things went wrong with the cooking and everything snowballed, said Matthew.
“Instead of staying calm I panicked and at one point didn’t even think I would be able to send out the dessert.
“None of this has been wasted experience though. I had a great time and have learnt a lot.”
The 30-year-old mechanical engineer from Vine Court, Fakenham, has been cooking since a teenager and enjoys being head chef at home because, in his words, he is “much better at it” than his girlfriend.
In addition, key ingredients to cookery success has been a large spoonful of inspiration from his gamekeeper grandfather, who took him hunting and taught him about meat preparation.
He also had a good measure of inspiration thanks to time spent travelling through Asia and New Zealand which gave him different ideas for culinary creations.
“I love my job,” said Matthew, who works for Sharp Systems, North Lynn.
“Now I would love to see if I can keep doing that and fit in some professional cookery too. This isn’t the end!”
