'Matriarch' enjoys 100th birthday

A BIRTHDAY bubbling with fun was arranged for Downham 100-year-old Kathleen Harris.

Mrs Harris, the “matriarch” of High Haven care home, started her special day with a pampering session and had her hair styled.

She then spent time with her family before being joined by the other residents for a party.

Care co-ordinator Eileen Wilson said: “She totally enjoyed herself and had a marvellous time.”

Mrs Harris was especially proud of her birthday card from The Queen and received so many flowers that she asked for them to be placed around the home so that the other residents could enjoy them as well.

After the celebrations, Mrs Harris had some quieter fun blowing bubbles with her friends in the lounge. “About 7pm, she was ready for bed,” said Mrs Wilson.

Mrs Harris has lived at the home since 2002 and is the oldest of the 38 residents. “She is our matriarch. She is always smiling and loves to see people. Her health is fantastic but she is not mobile,” said Mrs Wilson.

Born in Deal, Kent, Mrs Harris moved to Downham after the death of her husband. She lived initially at Dennis Sneezum Court and her son, Bruce, said: “She happily joined a circle of Downham friends.”

When she needed closer supervision after a series of falls, she moved to High Haven. “She has lived here happily for the last few years. The staff have been magnificent,” said Mr Harris.
