More time for patient care bid
NURSES across the country will have more time to spend directly caring for patients if a new project being trialled at Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital goes to plan.
The study has revealed one nurse spent just 31 per cent of her time on a usual shift in direct contact with patients, while the rest was taken up with other duties.
The QEH is one of ten NHS trusts throughout the country taking part in the the Releasing Time to Care productive ward project, but if it works, the model will be rolled out across the country.
It is hoped by making processes more efficient through steps such as having a standard system for organising supply cupboards to cut wasted time, nurses will have more time for care.
The project is being trialled by staff working with urology patients on Gayton Ward until December.
Ward manager Sister Cathryn Abbs-Rowe said: “We volunteered to take part in this project because we could see the benefits for the hospital in general and the patients in particular.
“One of the general comments heard in all hospitals is that nursing staff should have more time to spend on actually looking after their patients and cut down on the time spent on other duties.”
