'Move over – we're in charge at Sporle!'

PUPIL power came to the fore at Sporle Primary School as part of a national initiative, with children leading assembly and taking classes for a day.

Headteacher Malcolm Brockway said the "Takeover Day" initiative was organised by the Children's Commissioner to encourage employers to let children and young people take charge so they could experience the world of work.

"As this is a school, it lent itself to the opportunity and the children loved it when we let them be in charge," he said.

Eight-year-olds Lewis Parker-Colman and Harrison Bond stepped into Mr Brockway's shoes – and even wore a shirt and tie like him – to take that afternoon's school assembly, and nine-year-olds Lucy Soame and Sam Beech led lessons.

Some pupils joined school secretary Mrs Andrea Soame in the office, some helped supervisors in the dining room or on playground duty, and others took the register in their classes.

Mr Brockway said, coincidentally, it was also an open day at the Sporle school so several parents were sitting in on lessons, attending assembly and having lunch there to experience school life and they saw at first hand how the youngsters coped with their newly-acquired responsibilities.

Children's impressions of the day included one who thought "it let the teachers know what it feels like to be a child", others "liked having coffee and cake at play time" and said "being a secretary is fun", while one remarked "children are sometimes hard to control".
