MP Truss makes Marham plea
SOUTH West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss has called for a definitive statement from the government after yet more speculation about RAF Marham’s future.
The issue of the West Norfolk base is back on the agenda after, reportedly, suggestions have been made RAF Leuchars in Scotland should close - meaning Marham might then be secure.
During business questions in the House of Commons yesterday , Ms Truss told leader of the house Sir George Young: “Given the level of speculation about airbases this week, I am very, very concerned about the impact on service personnel at RAF Marham in my constituency.
“Given, also, that the economic and military case has been made in favour of RAF Marham, and that appears to be the view of the MOD, could I please ask for a statement so we can have some certainty on this issue.”
Sir George said that no decision had been taken and his understanding was none would be made until the Spring.
But he felt the strong case Ms Truss had repeatedly made on RAF Marham’s behalf would have been heard.
Ms Truss later said she was keen to see an end to the uncertainty and would keep making the case for the base.
