Mum and son hurt in crash
A MOTHER and son were seriously injured in the early hours of Sunday morning after they were hit by a car while they were walking home.
A Middleton man spoke yesterday of the traumatic moment he thought his wife had been killed.
Both Sarah Hall (32) and her 16-year-old son James were seriously injured on the A47 when they were hit by a car which failed to stop at the scene at around 3am.
Her husband Jim had been asleep in bed but was woken by a phone call telling him of the accident and he rushed to the scene.
"I was allowed to touch my wife and she was cold. I thought she was dead," he said.
Mrs Hall had been walking home with two friends after a night out in Lynn when her son phoned her.
She said she needed a pair of shoes because the boots she was wearing were uncomfortable after the four-mile walk. James decided to leave the family home in St Mary's Terrace and cycle along the A47 at 3am to meet her.
Minutes later the pair, who had been walking on the verge with the friends, were involved in an accident with a Peugeot car which did not stop.
The two friends were not injured.
Mr Hall, who is disabled, said it was a surreal moment: "I had this helpless, empty feeling.
"I was there and then I wasn't there. It wasn't happening. I could not take it all in. I don't want to feel like that again."
He said James, who works for the Jade Garden Chinese takeaway in Gaywood, sat on the side of the road with a four-inch gash in the back of his head.
"He was moaning and mumbling. He was not sure of what was going on," he said.
The accident happened close to the junction of Hill Road and the A47 just before Middleton.
Both Mrs Hall, who has two other children, and James were taken to Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital where yesterday they were described as "stable but serious".
Mrs Hall has suffered a fractured pelvis and serious internal injuries. She is destined to be transferred to the Norfolk and Norwich hospital for treatment, said her husband. James may be transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital at Cambridge.
Speaking of his trauma yesterday, Mr Hall asked for the whole family to pull together because of what had happened.
l A car was found by police two hours after the incident, parked in the middle of the carriageway at Gayton.
The driver was treated for injuries before being arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol, failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision and dangerous driving.
He was released on police bail to a date in November.
Officers are keen to speak to witnesses to the incident which happened at around 3.45am.
They should contact Sgt Mark Murphy at Swaffham Road Policing on 0845 456 4567.
