National honour for bereaved mum

A BEREAVED West Norfolk mother has been named a volunteer of the year by a road safety charity.

Bridget Wall, of Victory Road, Downham, was awarded the honour by Brake, a national charity working to reduce deaths and injuries on UK roads.

Mrs Wall, who shares the title with Liz Voysey, from Suffolk, joined the charity after her only son Adam (24) was killed riding his motorbike on the A47 at Wisbech in November 2002.

She has since used her tragic experience to help others, running a bereavement support group, talking to police family liaison officers, raising awareness about road safety and fundraising for the charity.

Mrs Wall, who is also a campaigner with road safety charity RoadPeace, plays an active part in lobbying for the rights of road victims, safer road conditions and changes in the law to bring in tougher sentences for motorists who kill and injure others.

In 2006, she attended a meeting with politicians in London with South West Norfolk MP Christopher Fraser to discuss how to ensure dangerous drivers are properly punished.

Brake's general manager, Ms Sarah Fatica, said: "Volunteers have a key role to play in Brake's work and we are proud to have such a great woman involved in helping us prevent road deaths and improve support for those affected by road crashes.

"Everyone at Brake would like to take this opportunity to thank the growing number of volunteers who enable us to make roads safer by raising awareness in communities across the country and by providing much-needed support."

Awards were presented to volunteers at a reception held at the Houses of Parliament on Thursday.

Brake volunteers are involved in fundraising, talking to the media, campaigning and supporting people bereaved or injured by road crashes.

Anyone wanting to get involved with the charity can contact volunteer manager Mrs Lisa Kendall by emailing lisa.kendall2@virgin.net or by calling 01484 683294.
