Navy crew joins tribute
REMEMBRANCE Day commemorations in Lynn this year were boosted by the presence of the commanding officer and 25 crew members from HMS Brocklesby, the Royal Navy minehunter, visiting the town.
An estimated 600-plus people, one of the best turnouts for many years, gathered around the war memorial in the Tower Gardens for Sunday's tribute service, as the sun shone through after early morning rain.
Lynn Town Band provided music beside the memorial as the civic procession, led by the robed sword and mace-bearers, made its way from the Town Hall and along St James Street to Tower Gardens.
Following closely behind was a parade including the ship's company from HMS Brocklesby, an RAF Marham contingent, standard bearers and local sea, Army and air cadets.
Borough Mayor Kathy Mellish led the wreath-laying at the memorial and among those paying their respects in this way were the High Sheriff of Norfolk, the Earl of Romney from Gayton Hall, North West Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham, Lieutenant Commander Matt Dennis from HMS Brocklesby and RAF Marham commanding officer Group Captain Phil Osborn.
About 30 wreaths were laid and the two-minute silence was marked at 11am with the playing of Last Post and Reveille, with standards lowered and raised as the bugler played.
Bishop of Lynn, the Rt Rev James Langstaff, led the short service of prayers at the memorial and also gave the sermon in St Margaret's Church at the full service which followed afterwards.
