Navy to visit Lynn for Remembrance Day

LYNN docks are to host HMS Brocklesby this weekend when crew members are to take part in the town's Remembrance Day activities.

The Royal Navy vessel will arrive at around 6am tomorrow (Friday) and will be moored at Bentinck docks until the same time on Monday morning.

Commanding officer Lieutenant Matthew Dennis will lay a wreath during Sunday's Remembrance Day service at Lynn's Tower Gardens and around 25 members of the ship's crew will take part in a special parade to mark the occasion.

The boat, a 1982 Hunt Class Destroyer, will not be open to the general public but a number of local groups including the local sea cadets are expected to be given a tour.

It is one of the largest vessels in the world to be built of glass reinforced plastic (GRP) at 60 metres in length and ten metres across the beam. This minimises its magnetic signature.

Its main role is as a minehunter, using high definition sonar to detect and locate mines and then destroy them using explosives placed either by one of the ship's remote-control mine disposal systems or by the ship's diving team. The addition of a 30mm gun enables a secondary role as patrol craft.

With hydraulic bow thrusters it will be suited for the tight turn in the River Great Ouse and the delicate manouvering into the docks.

Lieutenant Commander Dennis will visit West Norfolk Deputy Mayor Michael Langwade at Lynn Town Hall before welcoming him aboard for a special lunch.

And a civic reception will be held on board in the evening.

Some West Norfolk residents expressed disappointment they would not be allowed to go on board.

Sophia Buckingham, of Babingley Place, West Winch, contacted the Lynn News to ask: "Why aren't the ordinary citizens of Lynn being invited, many of whom are former Royal Navy personnel?"

HMS Brocklesby is a member of the Third Mine Countermeasures Squadron based at Faslane, on the west coast of Scotland.

See tomorrow's Lynn News for more information about Remembrance Day services being held in West Norfolk.
