Netball mums aim to be force to be reckoned with

DOWNHAM has a new netball group after sessions to get people back into sport proved right on target.

For although the sessions have now finished, more than 30 people came forward and have now formed a club of their own.

The Lynn News' sister publication, the Citizen, had reported how a group of Wimbotsham mums decided to reactivate their interest in netball by attending new weekly sessions at Downham Leisure Centre on a Thursday evening.

The ten-week sessions, held between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, took place under the Get Back Into scheme, part of the Active Norfolk county initiative encouraging people to get back into sport and healthy activity.

The sessions were run in partnership with West Norfolk Council which is running its own Let's Get Active campaign to encourage people into healthier lifestyles.

The Wimbotsham mums – most of whom had not played netball since primary school – started attending the Downham sessions after they took part in a Let's Get Active roadshow last summer.

Numbers blossomed when they were joined by Downham mums, meaning the group has more than 30 people in all.

The sessions came to a halt last month but the mums were so determined to keep matters going that they have formed their own group, Downham Ladies' Netball Club, to take themselves forward.

Already they have a treasurer and a secretary, and hopefully joining a league will follow.

Mr Daniel Charlesworth of Active Norfolk was impressed with the fact Downham had launched its own group.

"The idea is that these sessions grow into self-sustaining clubs," he said.
