New bed raises smiles in Burnham

FRIENDS of Burnham Market Day Centre have donated £1,000 to improve the centre's facilities in a recently-finished project also involving the Burnhams' Gardening Club.

David Brown, chairman of the friends, said they had been only too happy to help by providing added facilities for members to enjoy.

A former ground-level flower bed and shingle area in front of the building has been extensively paved and a raised flower bed built. The work was carried out by Mr Paul Sizeland of Norfolk Coast Builders.

Day service co-ordinator, Angela Arndt, said: "Now our members can not only enjoy the new flower bed but they can also sit outside whenever the weather is nice."

She added the raised bed made it easier for members who wanted to help maintain it.

Mrs Arndt invited the gardening club to get involved.

"Our members were only too happy," said chairman Mrs Sibson, who added that members donated plants and helped plant them.

Mrs Arndt said the new area also meant easier access. "Previously members who are in a wheelchair or use a walking aid found it difficult to negotiate the shingle area."

The centre is run by Norfolk Age Concern for people referred by the health or social services. "It not only provides our members with a chance to meet other people but also enables them to enjoy lunch together.

"We also offer information for members and the public."

The centre has 45 members and opens Monday to Thursday from 9am to 5pm.
