New bid on Clenchwarton homes plan

A CONTROVERSIAL housing estate could still go ahead in Clenchwarton after developers re-submitted their planning application.

Flagship Housing still hopes to build 14 affordable homes on agricultural land west of Smallholdings Road and is "hopeful" the scheme will now be approved.

The developers' new application includes improvements to the narrow road leading to the site and it is hoped these changes will satisfy West Norfolk Council's development control board, which refused the application on road safety grounds last month.

After meeting with highways officials, Flagship has agreed to increase the width of the single-track road, install a pavement and widen the existing bend to five-and-a-half metres.

Villagers were divided into two camps when the application was first submitted more than a year ago.

Many residents, including the parish council, welcomed the prospect of more affordable housing, but others felt the selected site was unsuitable and the road could put lives at risk.

Highways officials shared their concerns and condemned the plans, but planning chiefs approved the scheme in March on the condition the homes would remain affordable and priority be given to existing residents.

But the plans came under renewed scrutiny after Flagship failed to meet its end of the bargain.

The developer was told it must sign an agreement stating the completed homes would be made available only to people matching the council's criteria, but it missed the deadline by four months.

Planners scrapped their previous decision and looked at the application afresh in September, changing their minds about the scheme.

A spokesman for Flagship Housing told the Lynn News: "We have met with the highways authority and we think we have now met their requirements. We are hopeful this time."
