New bridge as Walks plan takes another step forward
MULTI-MILLION pound plans to revamp The Walks in Lynn took a major step forward to completion when a new footbridge was installed across the Gaywood River.
The modern structure, which was designed and made in the Netherlands, was hoisted into place as part of the 3.5 million restoration project to preserve Norfolk's last surviving example of a complete 18th century town walk.
It means visitors can now cross from the recreation ground to Vancouver Island and the new bandstand, which has also been given a new lease of life as part of the scheme jointly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and West Norfolk Council.
The steel bridge, which cost around 40,000, has a different design to the one originally planned which sparked complaints from members of the public that it was too modern and out of keeping with the rest of the area when drawings went on display last June.
Steel beams underneath the bridge, giving a butterfly effect, were removed from the new design and the degree of the arch was reduced.
Project managers say the bridge continues a long-standing tradition of adding contemporary features to the park throughout its life.
Mrs Elizabeth Nockolds, the council's cabinet member for culture, said: “While this is a restoration project and we are obviously working meticulously on refurbishing and restoring key features of the park, such as the fountain and the Red Mount Chapel, there is no historic precedent for the bridge as this is a new feature.
“What is important is that we balance use and accessibility with historic features and make the park relevant for today’s lifestyles.
“The new bridge, along with the new management building, park warden, improved lighting and CCTV will make the park more accessible and will make it feel safe.”
The council’s project manager, Mr Mark Fuller, added: “The bridge will offer greater personal safety and security as the Vancouver Island will no longer be a dead end. It will improve circulation around the park generally and ensure that people are able to fully enjoy the many features.”
