New home for North Wootton signal box

THE results of a project to ensure the future of an historic railway signal box are to be revealed at a presentation evening.

The disused Victorian signal box was moved 160 miles from its home at North Wootton Scouts’ and Guides’ headquarters, in Station Road, North Wootton, to North Yorkshire, in September.

Wensleydale Railway Trust took on the signal box to bring it back into use at Leeming Bar Station in a 50,000 renovation project, backed with a 22,700 Heritage Lottery grant.

Former group scout leader David Smith, of Back Lane, Pott Row, worked for five years to find a new home for the box and save it from destruction.

He said: “I always referred to it as the old girl! I couldn’t let it get knocked down. It was 102 years old and it would have been criminal to destroy it.”

The project should be completed by August 31 and is hosting a presentation on its progress in North Wootton.

It is keen to see anyone who has an interest in or memories of the old box and hopes to record extra footage of people sharing their stories, which will be played on a touch screen information point on the station platform.

The old signal box presentation evening will be held at the Red Cat Hotel, Station Road, North Wootton, at 6.30pm, on Saturday.
