New Lynn Post Office opens

POST Office counter services opened in Lynn's WH Smith store yesterday following the controversial move from the main Baxter's Plain Post Office, which closed its doors on Wednesday.

About 15 people were waiting to use the new Norfolk Street facilities at 9am, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony by first customer John Wenham, WH Smith Lynn store manager David Webb and new Post Office manager Samantha Elkins.

There was no obvious protest following the campaign against the closure of the historic Baxters Plain building, which saw a 2,200-name petition submitted to the Post Office.

But there were some grumbles about the unfamiliar faces behind the new low-level counters and concerns about the old building's fate.

Early customer Ms Ashley Fox, from Norfolk Street, said: "For practical purposes, one Post Office is much the same as the other – but we will have to wait until Saturday to see just how busy it's going to get and whether we have to fight through all the people to get here."

Balloons and signs along the length of the store pointed customers towards the new Post Office, with its four open-plan serving positions and two designated primarily for Giro business banking, travel service and Bureau de Change.

WH Smith Post Office regional manager Ian Rowley said Lynn was the 17th WH Smith store to get a Post Office, and by the end of June next year there would be 77 nationwide. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5.30pm.

"Everyone here has had two to three weeks off-site training to get them up to a level. They will have one-to-one support for the next two weeks, and the manager and assistant manager for four weeks, to get this off the ground," he said.

"We will also have a team of Bureau and Post Office specialists visit the store once a week after that to make sure everything is going well."
