New Lynn scheme helps clubgoers
A NEW scheme aimed at providing a safe haven for vulnerable pub and clubgoers was piloted in Lynn at the weekend – and proved a success when it helped one person unconscious through excess alcohol.
The idea of the SOS mobile vehicle, manned by volunteers from different agencies, is to protect anyone left feeling vulnerable through drink, drugs or violence while on a night out.
It offers a place of safety to make free telephone calls, obtain first aid and ensures those attending come to no further harm.
The vehicle was parked in the Vancouver Centre from 10pm on Saturday to 3am on Sunday.
Norfolk Police Licensing Sergeant Paul Graves said ten people had been helped in all, including the unconscious person who was revived. Others included those upset by domestic incidents.
It also attracted interest from other local people, curious to see how it worked.
"The vehicle in Lynn provides a safe environment for people to go if they are feeling vulnerable, have had too much to drink or are unsure how they are going to get home," said Sgt Graves, who was pleased with how the scheme had gone.
The scheme will be piloted in Lynn over two weekends – the vehicle being in the same place tomorrow and Sunday, at the same times – after which a decision will be made to see if it is effective or needed.
Partner agencies taking part in the Lynn area include Norfolk Police, West Norfolk Council, The Matthew Project and Norfolk Drug and Alcohol Team.
A similar scheme was first launched in Norwich in 2002 following the alcohol-related deaths of three young people in separate incidents after nights out in the city.
