Nine more bikes for West Norfolk bobbies

WEST Norfolk residents can expect to see more bobbies on their bikes thanks to the delivery of nine new sets of wheels.

Police officers and police community support officers (PCSOs) from Safer Neighbourhood Teams in Downham, Terrington St Clement and Watlington will soon be travelling through their parishes on brand new mountain bikes, seven of which were donated by Downham Local Action Group.

The group is made up of residents, representatives from the police and fire brigade, as well as members of local organisations, such as the town council.

It decides how best to spend Government funding provided to tackle crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour in the community.

The three teams cover more than 60 parishes in some of the most rural parts of West Norfolk, stretching from the Cambridgeshire border to Feltwell in the south and to Marham in the east.

Sergeant Marcus Rowe, said: "Our police officers and PCSOs have previously had to rely on cars to get them to and from the many parishes they police – which has been far from ideal.

"The community asked for more high-visibility patrols which we're now able to provide by getting out of our cars and onto our bikes."

Mr Frank Humm, chairman of the action group, added: "The Local Action Group is there to help the Safer Neighbourhood Teams police the local area and give the people in the villages a sense of reassurance.

"The Safer Neighbourhood Teams asked for the bikes to help the PCSOs get out into their communities."

The two bikes not provided by the group were bought by the police force.
