Nippies and spivs night held at Narborough
SCENES reminiscent of TV's Dad's Army programme were to be found at Narborough Community Centre when Swaffham Rotary Club held a 1940s-style social evening there.
Guests dressed in clothes of the period and various wartime service personnel, Land Army girls, farmers, a couple of spivs, a butcher with a gas mask and a Lyons Tea Shop waitress were spotted on the night.
Rodger Bilverstone, from Swaffham Players, wearing a demob suit and carrying an identity card and coins of the time, won the best-dressed competition.
The event coincided with the 70th anniversary of rationing in Britain and a frugal meal, including leek and potato soup, cottage pie with peas, treacle tart and a pint of beer or cider, was served to the 100-plus people present.
Club spokesman Denis Bishop said the hall was bedecked with Union flags and bunting and the music and entertainment was produced and led by Jill Dobbs and the local group, Close Harmony.
"The group encouraged everyone to join in with many songs from the 1940s," he said.
"A 1940s quiz was fiercely contested by all the guests and the raffle prizes included an instruction book on how to comply with the black-out regulations."
Swaffham Rotary's international team, led by Robin and Diana Rayner, organised the evening and ensured the hall was suitably decorated for the occasion. The event raised about 1,000 to be shared by international WaterAid and the Smile Train charity.
Patriotic fervour at Narborough Community Centre as revellers, dressed 1940s-style, wave their flags and join in singing songs of the era at the Swaffham Rotary Club event.
