No change over Marham

AMID continuing speculation about RAF Marham, Elizabeth Truss said the situation had not changed despite the loss of a squadron announced last week.

She admitted: “I just keep hearing rumours. I have heard rumours all the way through.”

It is now expected to be spring or summer before an announcement on whether the base is to close or not is made.

But Ms Truss said the delay, and the fact no announcement will be made during campaigning for the May elections, was encouraging to make sure the decision was not clouded by any political concerns.

She said: “It’s not got any more positive, but it hasn’t got any more negative, either.”

She had also pressed ministers, arguing it would be cost-effective to house the RAF’s new joint strike fighter jets, which come into service in 2021, at Marham, instead of RAF Lossiemouth.
