Norfolk county councillors claim £5,000 in expenses

A NORFOLK county councillor has claimed more than £1,000 in expenses in three months.

Michael Chenery, who represents Docking, has claimed a total of £1,365.71 in petrol and subsistence between April and June this year.

A Freedom of Information request lodged by the Lynn News revealed that West Norfolk members asked for £5,772.11 in expenses over a three month period.

Mr Chenery has claimed the highest amount of expenses while Stephen Bett, who represents north coast, has asked for the lowest amount at £43.20, in May.

Councillors are able to claim 45p a mile to cover fuel costs.

They also receive a basic allowance of £8,929.

The Lynn News has tried to contact Mr Chenery, who is also a West Norfolk councillor, but he has not responded.

Mr Chenery’s expenses for April saw claims for 811 miles, £364.95, and £36.25 subsistence.

He claimed back fuel costs for travelling to 11 meetings, including the Sutton Bridge Power Station Liaison Group along with parish councils in Hecham, East Rudham and Sedgeford.

In May, Mr Chenery claimed £499.50 for 1,110 miles and £55.01 subsistence.

During this month he attended parish council and county hall meetings along with visits to Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Sandringham Hospital.

He also claimed for picking up road signs for the Sedgeford Jubilee celebrations.

He asked for £372.15 for 827 miles in June and £37.85 subsistence.

He claimed for attending meetings, including one for the Norfolk Churches Trust, along with visits relating to flooding at Heacham.

John Dobson, who represents Dersingham claimed a total of £203.40 for April, May and June.

While cabinet member Harry Humphrey, Marshland South, put in claims of a total of £1,097.55 for the three month period.

Downham member Shelagh Hutson asked for a total of £363.60 over the three months.

Michael Langwade, Gaywood South, claimed £285.60 for May while Lynn ward member Brian Long asked for £115.60 for the same month.

Gaywood North and Central division ward member Jean Mickleburgh asked for a total of £518.95 for April, May and June.

Council leader Derrick Murphy, Freebridge, claimed £351 for April while his wife Janet, Gayton, asked for £299.25 for the same month.

Feltwell member Anthony White claimed a total of £432.40 for May and June.

Anthony Wright , who represents Marshland North, claimed a total of £695.85 for the three months.
