North Lynn dealer puts drugs down sink

A NORTH Lynn drug dealer tried to wash heroin down the sink as police knocked on his front door, Norwich Crown Court heard yesterday.

Larry Mayes (47), of 18 Mariners Way, was jailed for five years after police recovered the drug and a total of 186,791 – including packages of cash in a safe hidden behind a wardrobe at his home. Officers also found 5,000 worth of jewellery and the 180 worth of heroin he tried to wash away.

Mayes, who has numerous previous convictions for burglary, dishonesty and possessing drugs, admitted possession of heroin and five offences of concealing criminal property between February 24, 2003, and February 3, 2007.

The court heard he had cash in different building society accounts and had bought a 19,845 Saab car in July, 2003.

Christopher Morgan, prosecuting, said: " The Crown's case is this man has accumulated 300,000 as a result of his wholesale drug dealing."

Judge Paul Downes was told Mayes claimed the drugs were for his own use but made no comment to police on the money or jewellery. He was last jailed in March 1995 for 21 months when he also had 10,000 and a Saab car seized.

William Carter, for Mayes, said his client had now got himself off drugs.

"He was a long-term user. He wants qualifications so he can make a clean start when he is released," he said.

Judge Downes told him: "You have previous convictions including two previously for similar offences. There seems to be a connection between large sums of money and drugs.

"We cannot say precisely how much of the cash was involved with dishonest drug dealing, you have pleaded on the basis that some was due to criminal behaviour."

The court heard there will be a criminal confiscation order hearing at a later date.
