NORTH WOOTTON: Superhero students in charity breakout

A student from North Wootton took on a fundraising challenge which saw her trying to flee the country without spending any money in just 36 hours.

Claire Jermany, 21, heard of the challenge through her university, which was asking students to attempt to get as far away from their campus as possible in just 36 hours with no money.

An American Studies student at the University of Nottingham, she decided this would be the perfect break from her course and signed up with her friend, Harry Wild, 21, from Bath, to complete the challenge while dressed as superheroes.

She said: “It was really exciting, but a bit daunting considering what we had to try and get with no money.

“We managed to make our way to Birmingham and then headed to the airport to see if we could blag any free flights. We didn’t have any luck, but managed to get a free National Express to Stansted Airport.

“Once again we didn’t manage to get any flights and when we headed to Heathrow with no luck it felt like we were just doing a massive tour of the airports.”

The pair decided to give up on the distance challenge and instead focused on documenting their journey for extra points, by capturing the most imaginative photographs of their travels.

Miss Jermany said: “We went to the Ritz in London and had a picture with the doorman, then we found an Audi garage and they let us have pictures in the cars.”

The Jailbreak event was fundraising for Enactus Nottingham, an organisation that helps students to make a difference in their communities.

Miss Jermany said: “It was a really fun adventure and we helped raise more than £11,000 overall.

“We didn’t get as far as we would have liked – one pair managed to make it to Southern Turkey and I can’t wait to find out how they did it.”
