Nurses streets ahead to promote health

THESE Lynn Queen Elizabeth Hospital nurses are preparing to take part in the town's 10k road race this year and NHS Norfolk wants to encourage other groups of workers to follow suit.

The organisation is working to encourage workplace health programmes as part of the NHS Change 4 Life campaign and believes the Bespak Grand East Anglia Run (GEAR) is an ideal vehicle.

Workplace health improvement specialist Justine Hottinger said: "A whole range of physical activities could be used to help promote good health among the workforce: stepometre challenges, cycling initiatives or group participation in competitions like the Bespak Grand East Anglia Run can be used to help engage staff."

NHS Norfolk has ploughed 3,000 of sponsorship into West Norfolk Council-organised GEAR to prop up sponsorship from main supporter medical device manufacturer Bespak and others.

Councillor Elizabeth Nockolds, cabinet member for Sports, Arts and Open Spaces, said: "I'm really pleased to see the team of nurses embarking on this challenge and wish them every success.

"Their commitment is just one example of the way in which the Bespak Grand East Anglia Run benefits the area. It provides an excellent focus for activities such as the NHS's campaign, brings people together to enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, raises money for good local causes and showcases the beauty of Lynn."
