Ofsted chiefs praise Greyfriars' pupils

PUPILS at Lynn's Greyfriars Primary School are making good progress and standards are rising, according to the school's latest Ofsted report.

Inspectors who visited the 295-pupil school in March commented on the fun they had surrounded by pupils dressed as "pirates, princesses and Pucks" on World Book Day.

They also highlighted parents' praise for the school, including the comment: "We could not have picked a better school than Greyfriars."

The efforts of headteacher Paul Shanks to work with staff to improve teaching, assessment and the curriculum are recognised in the report.

It states: "These efforts have paid off. From very low starting points, pupils now make good progress throughout the school."

Pupils taking English as an additional language were found to make very good progress. "Standards are rising and are now broadly in line with the national average," states the report.

The school was found to be effective in ensuring pupils with complex needs were included in all aspects of school life.

"Some have challenging behaviour and are managed with warmth, respect and dignity," the report continues.

Pupils' personal development contributed strongly to improving standards. Pupils took responsibility for the part they played in school life, "developing their skills as citizens and becoming well-rounded and thoughtful young people."

Teaching and learning were rated as good. Staff dealt with pupils respectfully, enthusing and encouraging them to work hard. Lessons were interesting and thoroughly planned. Marking was thorough and consistent. Rigorous focus on each pupil's achievement ensured no pupil was overlooked.

Mr Shanks said: "We are delighted that Ofsted has highlighted the many strengths of our school. I would like to thank staff, governors, pupils and parents for their continuing efforts in making our school a success."
