Opposition to Downham homes plans
DOWNHAM planners on Tuesday recommended refusal of a fresh attempt to build homes on the former Jim Russell garage site in the town.
The planning application for 27 flats and eight chalet bungalows at the junction of London Road and Park Lane has also attracted opposition from nearby residents.
After the meeting of the town council's planning and environmental committee, potential developer Stuart Gibbs pledged his willingness to work with the local community to try to allay their fears.
A previous application to build 29 flats and nine houses at the site was rejected by West Norfolk Council earlier this year. Concerns included design, density, loss of privacy, drainage concerns and lack of infrastructure.
Mr Trevor Armstrong, of 19 High Hatters Close, immediately behind the garage, said the re-submitted application was not materially different to the original.
He was still concerned about overlooking and the closeness of the development to his boundary.
He said he and other objectors were prepared to attend the meeting of West Norfolk Development Control Board which considers the application.
Other objections include possible parking problems in Park Lane leading to congestion at the junction with the main road.
Mr Gibbs said: "We have tried to take into consideration all the objections raised previously.
"The houses along the back are now bungalows and we have reduced the density. We have also included some one-bedroomed flats and there is a significant amount of parking in the centre of the flats."
