Opposition to Watlington homes plan
OPPOSITION is raging against a plan to develop a patch of contaminated land with 33 new homes.
Around 35 people turned out to a parish council meeting to discuss a planning application for the site off Rowan Close, Watlington, and West Norfolk Council has been bombarded with letters of objection.
Parish council vice-chairman and concerned resident Jean Golding, of Hawthorne Close, said: "There is total uproar concerning this, and rightly so.
"I would like to see the site developed, but 33 houses is just too much. It is totally out of keeping."
There is concern over increased traffic close to the doctors' surgery, proposed homes not fitting in with surrounding bungalows, over-development and possible impacts of contamination on the site, which has been used as a dump.
One of around 20 people to have objected to the Orchid Properties plan in writing, retired granddad-of-three Mr Charles Craske (67), of adjoining Fen Road, wrote: "This is a village, not a town, and this new proposed development is not in keeping with a village."
Watlington Parish Council has stated it is in favour of a previous plan for 15 homes, and backs current opposition.
The borough council says the site needs appropriate design risk assessments, but safe development should be possible with the application of existing guidelines.
