Peace vigil in Fakenham Quaker week

Quaker Week will be celebrated in Fakenham and Wells from Sunday.

Members of the Society of Friends have had a strong presence in Wells since the early 1700s and still regularly gather on Sunday mornings at the Meeting House in Church Street.

Although Quakers had a significant impact in the life of Fakenham, particularly during the 18th century, there has been no significant activity in the town for the past two centuries.

Reminders can be found today in the road name Quaker Lane down towards the river and the Peckover cemetery outside the Aldiss store. The Peckovers from Wisbech were prominent Quakers and influential bankers and many family members were buried in this private cemetery.

Highlights of the week will include an exhibition of 15 hand-made quilts, a peace vigil, the screening of Al Gore's film An Inconvenient Truth and two sessions exploring what Quakerism signifies in today's world.

All these activities are centred on the Meeting House in Wells. A milestone meeting in Fakenham will be held at the Methodist Church Schoolroom, to which all are invited.

The full programme for the week is:

l Sunday: Meeting for worship, 10.30am; Quaker Quest one, 3pm-6pm.
