Police, firemen under attack
A hostile crowd pelted police and firemen with bottles when they tackled an unofficial and potentially-dangerous Guy Fawkes bonfire in South Lynn on Monday.
The makeshift blaze in Saddlebow Road was reported at about 8.20pm by a Safer Neighbourhood patrol which identified a potential risk to people present and nearby homes.
The fire was believed to be unstable and its contents were unknown so police officers and police community support officers cordoned off the area and dispersed the crowd to allow firefighters to tackle to blaze.
A police spokesman said: "Both police and firefighters were met with hostility from some of those in the crowd. Bottles were thrown at officers and fireworks were being let off dangerously."
The South Lynn Safer Neighbourhood Team is now investigating anti-social behaviour incidents reported at the disturbance.
A member of the team, Police Community Support Officer Diane Rayfield, said patrols were stepped up throughout the town around Bonfire Night to try to prevent injury and contain any unruly behaviour.
Another potentially dangerous bonfire was identified in Wisbech Road on Monday night and PCSO Rayfield said: "We found a number of similar bonfires with hazardous contents which had to be dealt with and appeared to attract large groups including unsupervised children."
The main culprits on Monday night were said to be a large group of youths but children and adults were also present at times.
Any witnesses to the incidents are asked to contact the Safer Neighbourhood Team on 0845 456 4567.
