POP off to resourceful start at QEH
CHILDREN admitted to Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital with breaks and fractures have something to put a smile back on their face thanks to a generous donation from Lynn firm Learning Resources.
The educational toy company, on the Hardwick Industrial Estate, has stepped into help after a 2,500 appeal for special equipment in the orthopaedic (fracture) outpatient department got off to a disappointing start.
The department launched the POP (Paediatric Orthopaedic Play) appeal last month to upgrade its modest "children's corner" in the general waiting area.
It wanted to buy colourful, wall-mountable toys to provide a welcome distraction to hurting youngsters and make their hospital experience a lot less daunting.
The appeal got off to a slow start, but thankfully Learning Resources stepped in to help after reading about it in the Lynn News.
The firm, in Oldmedow Road, has donated eight toys including an electronic alphabet chalkboard, a sorting pocket chart, magnetic calendar and an inflatable skeleton!
Staff nurse Sally Boswell said the department treats about 1,700 patients a month and about one third of those are under 16, some as young as a day old.
But as two thirds of patients will be up to 100-years-old or more, the department can't have noisy or small toys which would be a risk to people on crutches, and soft toys are unsuitable for hygiene reasons.
Staff nurse Diane Simpson said the department was really grateful for the donation.
"It has given us a tremendous boost, particularly because children visiting our clinic will be able to benefit from these toys for years to come."
