Pott Row: Cudgels drawn to save school
CUDGELS have been raised to save Pott Row First School after consultations were launched over the future of schools in the Grimston area.
As previously reported in the Lynn News, a review is taking place to ensure that children only change schools at the end of a key stage in the national curriculum and three options to enable this to take place locally are now being considered.
However, all three would sound the death knell for the 52-roll school in Cliffe-en-Howe Road – causing outrage among the community. More than 50 people packed into a public meeting at the school last Monday to discuss the options put forward by Norfolk County Council.
These include three five to 11 primary schools, with one new community school of up to 120 pupils, two five to 11 primary school and a new community school for between 140 and 230 pupils, and the third for a single primary school for between 275 and 325 pupils.
However, locals were upset that any of these would mean Pott Row would be lost, many of those describing it as a happy school with excellent results – as backed up by Ofsted inspections.
Governors and staff at the school, together with North-West Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham and senior school development officer for the county Tim Newton, attended the meeting.
The governors, supported by the community, later suggested that the county consider a fourth option – to keep the school as a pre-school and infant (key stage one) school. This would give more parental choice in the area and keep the core of the community alive.
Mr Newton later said no decisions had been made, stressing that the county was committed to sustainable, quality education and that saving money was not the whole issue
Consultations finish on Friday, October 23, and councillors will decide on specific proposals for both areas in November/December.
A further consultation will follow on these single proposals in January and February next year.
