Prince Philip visits Lynn ATC

THE Duke of Edinburgh made a special visit to Lynn yesterday to inspect the new headquarters of the town's Air Training Corps.

The royal guest was given a guided tour of the facility on Loke Road, including classrooms, offices and display boards, before inspecting the cadets in the parade ground.

Prince Philip also unveiled a plaque to mark the official opening of the building before signing the guest book.

He said: "This really is quite an achievement. It is so nice to see so many people here in a thriving air cadet squadron. Many congratulations to you."

Flt Lt Pauline Petch, of 42F Lynn Squadron Air Training Corps, who led Prince Philip on the tour, said the day was a huge success and was delighted to see him showing a keen enthusiasm in the cadets and their work.

She told the Lynn News: "It was fantastic. He was very impressed with the cadets and the squadron.

"He looked at the classrooms used for aircraft recognition, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and radio, flying and gliding. He was very interested in the youth and it was a very successful day."

The parade featured around 35 cadets, all from the Lynn area, who were delighted to put their skills to the test for their royal visitor.

Their efforts will be featured in a new ITV series charting the work of Prince Philip, which is due to be screened in mid-April.

A film crew from production company Indigo TV attended yesterday's visit as part of the on-going project which has covered royal engagements over the past year.

Work on the new building began in January last year, before being completed in September, and members have spent the past few weeks adding the finishing touches to their new home.

The squadron boasts a proud association with the Royal Family having been inspected by King George VI at Sandringham in 1940 and performing a guard of honour at the Sandringham Flower Show in recent years.

The Air Training Corps will be holding a meeting for its new intake from 7.30pm tomorrow.

Anyone interested in joining is welcome to attend.
