Prom gear change

PLANS for a regeneration project on Hunstanton's promenade have stepped up a gear after a consultant was appointed to create designs for the scheme, writes RICHARD LONG.

The Landscape Partnership will develop its proposals over the next two months when a bid for funding from the national Sea Change programme will also be submitted.

Before the appointment was made West Norfolk Council organised competitions, walks and workshops to find out what local people and visitors like about the promenade and what they would like to see improved.

The information will be used to help the consultants as they work to the brief of designing “an inspirational concept to enhance the promenade” which will reflect Hunstanton’s cultural assets and act as a flagship for continued regeneration.

The council worked alongside Hunstanton Town Council and 15 other local community representatives in choosing the The Landscape Partnership as consultants for the scheme.

Jon Bolam, Hunstanton Chamber of Trade secretary, said: “They had done their research into the culture and heritage of the town and they seemed open to developing their ideas with the public and the group.”

The Landscape Partnership concept builds on the natural heritage of Hunstanton’s unique striped cliffs and brings in references to literary figures with connections to the town.

Spokesman Mark Flatman said: “We are really excited to have been appointed and look forward to working closely with the council and stakeholder groups to develop proposals and to support them in their application for Sea Change funding in June.”

Tim Humphreys, the council’s tourism manager, added: “We have to apply in open competition with many other coastal towns.

“There’s no guarantee we’ll get any funding. But if we’re not successful, we will do our utmost to go ahead, even if it takes longer to achieve.” Deadline for applications is in June and a decision is expected in October.
