Promise to raise £100,000 for hospice
THE Freemasons of Norfolk are stepping up their fundraising efforts in the region in a bid to raise £100,000 for The Norfolk Hospice Tapping House by September 2009.
The Provincial Grand Lodge of Norfolk has decided to back the Snettisham-based hospice as it seeks to expand the care it provides by offering overnight facilities for residents.
For the past four years the lodge has provided teddy bears for children admitted to the accident and emergency departments at the county's major hospitals but has decided to back the hospice in a new fundraising drive.
Former deputy provincial grand master Colin Walmsley, of North Runcton, said: "A couple of years ago they mentioned they were to embark on an appeal for a bedded hospice unit in West Norfolk.
"They are desperate to provide residential care but that will cost an awful lot of money.
"We came up with the idea that the Norfolk Freemasons would raise 100,000 from our 4,000 members over a two-year period.
"Our aim is to present that cheque in September 2009, which will coincide with Norfolk being designated as a masonic province of 250 years."
Mr Walmsley, who is also a volunteer at Tapping House, said the date will also mark the 25th anniversary of the hospice.
The appeal was launched in May and has already raised more than 15,000 through events such as barbecues, raffles and race nights.
