Public will pay more for police

COUNCIL tax payers in West Norfolk will have to cough up an average of 26p per week more for policing in 2008/2009.

Norfolk Police Authority this week announced a 178 per year charge for a typical Band D property compared with 164 in the current financial year. The 8.3 per cent increase will see Band D householders paying a total of 3.43 a week for policing.

Chairman, Cllr Stephen Bett, of Thornham, said the figure represented excellent value and would allow continued investment in Police Community Support Officers and Safer Neighbourhood Teams.

He also pledged a robust response to serious and organised crime taking place in Norfolk or being run from the county.

Cllr Bett said the police service had been under-resourced and under-funded for too long.

"We have tackled that and the results are beginning to show," he added.
